Barriers to entry in the Meal Prep Business
In the meal prep space, the barriers to entry in this business are surprisingly low if you are happy to start modestly while you learn the business. I’d personally recommend starting in two stages. The first is to do it as quickly and inexpensively as possible. After you are making profits, have found your actual niche and some of the more effective ways to promote, you can start to invest more time and money on creating something more impressive.
This article is about how to get started as quickly, simply and inexpensively as possible.
Your quick-start guide
- Work out a niche and then a name.
- Create a website where you can change your content around as you adjust within your market, seeing what works and doesn’t work.
- Before starting to create your recipes, would be the best time to get started on the Meallogix Platform. This is an amazing company that has put together almost everything you will need for the automated day-day running of your business. It is a monthly subscription service in the cloud that was specifically built to help you run your meal preparation service. If you join at this stage, you can start by uploading your recipes directly into this platform and save yourself more time than you want to count in moving over your recipes into this platform later on. Meallogix also offers a state-of-the-art shopping cart onto which you can hook your website (but more of that later).
The other huge advantage to being on the Meallogix platform is that it will help you completely automate your business operations creating your shopping lists based on your orders, to arranging discounted but excellent delivery of your meals directly to your customers. Getting set up now, while you are creating your business would be the perfect sequence and give you a great head start. More details at https://www.meallogix.com
4. You will need to get legal so simply refer to (link to How to Legally Start a Meal Preparation Service article). As part of this step, you will have a kitchen and will be legally able to run it.
5. Open a business bank account under the business name.
6. Make it possible for your customers to buy from you by creating a fantastic shopping cart. The shopping cart is where your customers will buy and to create your own is expensive and you would risk creating something you don’t actually want. In our experience, meal prep operators often change their minds as to what kind of shopping cart would work best for their niche.
Meallogix offers the best in the business and is continuing to evolve it specifically for the meal preparation business.
7. If you haven’t already set yourself up with food distributors on the Meallogix platform directly (maybe because you are yet big enough to meet their minimum ordering requirements), then set yourself up with wholesale warehouses you can walk into and physically buy from like Restaurant Depot and Sams Club or Costco.
8. Promote: Before opening your doors would be a great time to lay the foundations of your promotion.
Here is a brief checklist of things to do at this stage (but make sure that all contact details are identical, including the street address you use for your business):
a. Create a Google listing (and get verified)
b. Create a Zell listing (and get verified)
c. Create a social media presence. Recommended are Facebook and Instagram but it is more important for you to use the platforms where you are the most comfortable and do it well.
d. Create some kind of list of every prospect you can possibly think of (including anyone who ever said they might be interested in buying your food).
e. Do a soft promotion to your friends, acquaintances and anyone along the way who expressed interest in your business.
f. Set up your grand opening (first cooking day), widely promote using social media, email blasts, phone calls, texts, etc. and sign up everyone you can think of and start!
What’s next?
Now you have started, you can iron out the bugs. Hopefully, your food is good enough that most of your first customers will sign up again and give you some referrals and you can really start to promote and scale up your company.
